TA Systematic Review on Features of Biomedical Science Program in Malaysian Higher Education Institutions

M.M. Hamdi,
Department of Para-Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS),
Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, Kota Samarahan, Sarawak.

Introduction; The increasing Malaysian population each year translates into escalating healthcare cost and the need for well-trained Biomedical Scientists to work in the clinical service niche area. Since the 90s, there are several Malaysian Higher Education Institutions known to offer both Biomedical Science and Biomedical Sciences courses. Those courses are different and may emphasised for practice in a non-clinical niche areas. Although the Allied Health Profession Act (Act 774) has been enacted in 2016; at present there are no clear guidelines to select biomedical courses according to niche areas. Thus leaving the public a difficult task to decide on the suitable course for the particular niche areas.
The objective of this study was to identify characters of courses offered by Malaysian Higher Education Institutions which suits for clinical; academic; health and industrial niche areas of biomedicine. Method; A systematic literature search using Google/Google Scholar and Pubmed has been made using specific search terms with Boolean operator AND/OR as to screen for Malaysian qualification agency (MQA) recognised undergraduate Biomedical Science and Biomedical Sciences course profile and published academic article pertaining to the course and its syllabus content. Results showed that Malaysian Higher Education Institutions offered both undergraduate Biomedical Science, suitable for clinical niche and Biomedical Sciences course, more suitable for non-clinical niche area; mainly characterised by their syllabus content and clinical exposure respectively. There were also Biomedical Science course which fit both clinical and non-clinical niche areas. However, there were more Biomedical Sciences course offered compared to the Biomedical Science course. Conclusion; Syllabus content and clinical exposure is a good indicator for the public to select the appropriate Biomedical Science or Biomedical Sciences course suitable for its respective niches.

Authors are encouraged to submit the full manuscript of the scientific paper as the presented papers will be reviewed and may be selected to be published in the Malaysian Journal of Medical Laboratory Sciences.

FINALLY AFTER 28 YEARS OF WAITING

MORE THAN 2 DECADES OF HISTORY CONCERNING THE ALLIED HEALTH BILL FROM OUR PERSPECTIVE.

Excerpts above are just memories now, as the current bill had undergone many changes, some clauses added in, some removed until it emerge as it is now.  Some of the matters proposed  then by MFMLT, the predecessor of MIMLS as seen in excerpts will not be realised now but kudos to the Allied Health Science Division (BSKB) of the Malaysian Ministry of Health for finally making the act a reality.

Our heartiest appreciation to the staffs of BSKB as their dedication and laborious hard work is indeed the driving force to this fruitful finale and highly commendable.
